Course objective The aim of the course is to enable students to get knowledge, understanding of the theory and to get practical skills in problem solving in the following areas: - Computer system software - Basic functions of operating system - Fundamentals of computer networks Principles of Internet operation

outcome 1 - written concise essay on the given topic
outcome 2 - written solution of given quantitative problem - laboratory exercises
outcome 3 - written concise essay on the given topic
outcome 4 - written solution of given quantitative problem - laboratory exercises
outcome 5 - continuous  assessment of student’s activities

Test in written form verifying mastering of the lectures. Assessment of laboratory exercises depends on the quantity and quality of prepared tutorials. The final mark is computed as the weighted sum of the component marks. The weights associated with the components are as follows: lectures = 0.5, laboratory exercises = 0.5

LECTURE
Software. Computer system software: basic functions of the operating system. Operating system layers and tasks. File systems. Properties and characteristics of selected operating systems. 
Software tools and software applications. Data compression and storing compressed data. 
Fundamentals of computer networks. Basic types of networks. Network topologies. Network protocols.Principles of Internet operation. Addressing in IP networks. Internet services. Network security. 
LABORATORY
Exercises are devoted to mastering fundamentals of the operating systems and software tools for network management and access to the WWW resources.
